BSc Hons Occupational Therapy
I transitioned to the Occupational Therapy profession later in life after spending several years traveling and working as a Nanny. A pivotal moment came when I spent time with a family member who had a young child with Autism. During this period, I observed therapists at work and realised that Occupational Therapy was the profession I wanted to pursue. For the past 20 years, I have worked as a Mental Health Occupational Therapist within the NHS, where I've had the privilege of helping many people achieve their goals and return to the activities that matter most to them.
My approach is always centred around the individual, working closely with each person and their families to understand their needs and wishes and how I can support them in making their lives better.
Throughout my career, I've worked in various settings, including with individuals under 65 who have developed Young Onset Dementia. Dementia and mild cognitive impairment can be incredibly stressful for both the individuals and their families.
Through Occupational Therapy, I offer a holistic assessment that can include cognitive assessments and observations of day-to-day tasks within the home and community. This helps to identify the kind of support that may be needed.
I'm particularly passionate about taking a “whole family approach” and finding creative ways to help people reconnect with their loved ones through meaningful activities that make them feel valued and connected.
On a personal note, I have first hand experience with the challenges of Neurodiversity within my own family. I understand how difficult it can be for those who realise they may have ADHD or autism to get a diagnosis and then find the right support. Over the past decade, through both lived experience and professional knowledge, I have been able to create an understanding and supportive environment for neurodiverse individuals, helping them navigate the often complex mental health issues that can impact all aspects of life.
Currently, I am working as a Specialist Mental Health Advisor for University Students. This role allows me to use both my professional skills and personal experiences to empower students with the tools they need to succeed in their studies.
In my spare time, I enjoy making jewellery, painting, and engaging in anything creative. My favourite moments are spent with my family, and we love nothing more than spending time in Devon and being near the sea.
